In a tragic case of abuse and murder, 70‑year‑old Shulai Wang was found dead near Auckland’s Gulf Harbour, her body wrapped in rice bags. Law enforcement traced the packaging to Kaixiao Liu, who ran a so‑called “Ark” home with his wife and children, treating women as servants. Liu and his wife were found guilty of manslaughter and kidnapping, receiving over ten years in prison. The case raises concerns about cult‑like powers in New Zealand’s immigrant communities.

Kaixiao Liu, a former “Got Talent” contestant in China, has been sentenced to more than ten years in prison for manslaughter and kidnapping after the body of 70‑year‑old Shulai Wang was found wrapped in rice bags near Auckland’s Gulf Harbour.

Wang had travelled from Hainan Island in August 2023 to live with Liu and his family in their home, which he called “the Ark.” The judge said women were forced into servitude, obeying Liu who was called “Lord” or “Master.” Wang’s daily routine involved caring for children, studying scripture and farming.

According to prosecutors, Wang struggled with the strict rules and was disciplined frequently. In March 2024, she attempted to escape, was caught and restrained, and died later that day. Her body was discovered by fishermen near the marina, and investigators traced the large rice purchases to Liu.

Liu’s wife, Lanyue Xiao, received nearly eight years for kidnapping and manslaughter. Liu’s parents also face charges for misconduct with human remains and will be sentenced later this year.

At sentencing, Justice Mathew Downs condemned Liu’s indifference, saying the death was lonely and frightening and that Liu showed no remorse. His lawyer argued for leniency, claiming his client was not a cult leader and had no followers forced to obey.
