Nigeria Tragedy: Military Plane Crashes into Swamp, 32 Dead

Remnants of a Nigerian military plane that crashed while carrying several passengers and crew members, in Ondo state

A Nigerian military ATR‑42 aircraft crashed into a swamp near the naval base of Igbokoda in Ondo State, killing all 32 people on board – 25 passengers and seven crew members. The aircraft had departed from Benin City bound for Lagos earlier that morning and vanished at 09:13.

President Bola Tinubu declared three days of national mourning and ordered the flag to fly at half‑mast across the country in tribute to the victims. He also called for a thorough investigation to determine the root causes and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Early reports indicated that the wreckage had a heavy concentration of clothes, shoes and the remnants of an engine in the water, with smoke visible over the swamp. Rescue crews have been working to recover bodies and investigate the flight records.

The Nigerian Air Force, which played a key role in national security operations, confirmed that most of the casualties were military personnel. This crash ranks among the deadliest air disasters in Nigeria’s recent history, following incidents in 2021 that claimed the lives of senior army officers and several others.

A full inquiry is now underway, with officials promising transparent reporting of findings. The nation mourns as investigators work to uncover what went wrong and how to safeguard the nation’s skies in the future.
