In brief
A 14‑year‑old pupil was apprehended after firing several shots at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, France, wounding the principal and a teacher. Both staff members received non‑life‑threatening treatment, and no students were harmed. Authorities say the incident is unrelated to ongoing school protests and will be investigated by police and education officials. The suspect entered the school with a firearm, was restrained by staff, and is now in custody. Interior and Education Ministers are scheduled to visit the scene as the case unfolds.
Four staff members were injured at Lakanal middle school in southern France on Monday. A 14‑year‑old pupil entered the school with a firearm, fired several shots, and was subsequently detained by a staff member. Two teachers and the principal were wounded; there were no injuries to students, who were confined to a secure area within seconds.
The incident, reported by BFMTV and Le Parisien, was not considered linked to the national school‑protest campaign over funding and safety, sources said. Education Minister Édouard Geffray confirmed that a pupil was the suspected perpetrator and that the school was under police control while the investigation proceeds.
Mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari said the suspect, who entered the premises with a gun, was immediately restrained by a staff member after the first shots rang out. The principal, 53, was shot in the leg; the 37‑year‑old teacher sustained a thigh wound. Both received hospital treatment for non‑life‑threatening injuries.
The investigation will continue with the involvement of the Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, who is scheduled to visit the scene that afternoon. Authorities emphasised that all students were safely confined within seconds, with no further harm.
