Russian Drone Strikes Target Kyiv Bridges: An Update
In the last four days, Russian forces have intensified attacks on Kyiv’s key infrastructure, focusing on its primary river crossings. The Pivnight (Northern) Bridge suffered a second consecutive strike, while the Pivden (Southern) Bridge was hit multiple times earlier in the week.
The most recent bombardment came just days after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unscheduled visit to the capital, raising questions about the strategic timing of Moscow’s offensive.
Dan Johnson, a BBC Ukraine correspondent positioned near one of the bridges, reports that the drones caused extensive structural damage but managed to avoid power lines. Local residents described the impact as “devastating” while emergency services worked to evacuate road users and secure the area.
These high‑profile attacks highlight the broader pattern of Moscow’s strategy: targeting critical civilian infrastructure to disrupt everyday life and weaken morale in the Ukrainian capital.
European and international leaders are calling for a coordinated response, while Ukrainian officials have pledged to reinforce bridge defenses and restore traffic immediately. The incidents also underscore the urgent need for humanitarian corridors and support for displaced civilians, who risk further displacement if key transit routes remain blocked.
