Two teenagers were seriously injured after a sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, authorities have confirmed.
Police were called to the school shortly after 2 p.m. local time (1 p.m. BST) on Friday, where officers arrested a man with a sword.
A third individual was also wounded; the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed, though local reports indicate the suspect was shot in the leg by police.
Eight other schools in the area were placed under lockdown, but the measures have since been lifted. The Vastmanland region declared a state of high alert in response to the attack.
Police have stated there is currently no further danger to the public.
Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, called the incident a "serious incident" on X, adding that "we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively."
Students had just returned from summer break for the new term, which began Monday or Wednesday this week depending on the academic year.
Brinell School has an enrolment of just under 500 students and is located 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Stockholm.
Sweden has faced several school attacks in recent years, including the worst mass shooting in 2025 at an adult education centre in Orebro that resulted in 11 deaths and led to tighter gun laws after the suspect legally owned four rifles, three of which were found at the school where the sword attack occurred.
Earlier, a violent attack on a secondary school in Malmö in 2022 killed two teachers, and an 18‑year‑old student later confessed to the assault.
In 2015 a teacher and a pupil were killed during a sword attack at a school in Trollhattan.
