BRISTOL, Pa. — On Tuesday, a devastating explosion struck the Bristol Health & Rehab Center, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple residents still missing. The blast occurred shortly after a utility crew responded to gas odor reports, prompting a chaotic emergency response.
Residents were evacuated amidst smoke and flames, and firefighters described a challenging rescue operation where they assisted individuals from stairwells and windows. Local authorities confirmed that as of Wednesday, five people were still unaccounted for but suggested some may have left with relatives.
Governor Josh Shapiro provided insights during a press conference, detailing how emergency responders descended on the 174-bed facility. Firefighters used heavy equipment, dogs, and even sonar to search through the wreckage, emphasizing the urgency of locating potential victims. Victims were physically handed over to police awaiting outside, showcasing the dire situation.
Witnesses described the explosion as sounding like an airplane crashing. Willie Tye, a nearby resident, recounted the terrifying moment, stating, I thought an airplane or something came and fell on my house. Upon investigating, he was met with images of chaos—fire and people fleeing the building.
The local gas utility, PECO, confirmed they were responding to reports of gas odors when the explosion occurred. They subsequently turned off gas services to ensure safety for responders and residents. However, it remains unclear if utility equipment was involved, and investigations by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission are ongoing.
Previously, the nursing home had faced various violations related to health and safety regulations in an October inspection, raising concerns about its operational standards. Despite a fire safety inspection in September 2024 yielding no citations, Pennsylvania Department of Health records indicated significant issues affecting the facility’s safety protocols.
Saber Healthcare Group, the nursing home's current management, expressed shock over the explosion and stated it would cooperate with investigations to ensure the safety of its staff and residents.
As search and rescue continues, the community hopes for the safe return of all residents.
