A Russian missile attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro has killed four people and injured 40, according to local authorities. Witnesses reported that a ballistic missile struck during the early hours on Monday, causing significant damage to an office building, vehicles, and nearby shops.

Videos shared on social media depicted a massive explosion alongside a busy motorway, further indicating the scale of the destruction. Dnipro, located approximately 100 kilometers from the front lines of conflict, has faced recurring attacks since Russia intensified its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The tragic incident occurred just one day before U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff was set to meet with President Vladimir Putin for discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The envoy has previously met with various delegations, including a Ukrainian team in Florida, which has sparked a series of diplomatic engagements described as “shuttle diplomacy” between the conflicting parties.

Despite ongoing discussions, significant differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly regarding territorial concessions in the Donbas region, which Ukraine refuses to abandon. President Putin has made it clear that Russia will pursue its objectives through military force if necessary. Concurrently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for security guarantees for Ukraine, expressing grave concerns about becoming more vulnerable to future attacks.

Zelensky, currently in Paris to seek support from French President Emmanuel Macron, faces challenges domestically as well, following a corruption scandal that has led to the resignation of key officials. Analysts suggest that recent developments may reflect a weakening of Zelensky's position as the war continues to claim countless lives and displace millions of Ukrainians.

The conflict, which dates back to 2014 with Russia's annexation of Crimea, has profoundly affected both nations, with an immense toll on civilian and military personnel.
