In brief

Dmitry Reut, a decorated officer of Ukraine’s GUR, claimed to have killed Anastasiia Berezovska, a suspected bomber from Monaco. Two days after the blast in Monaco, investigators found Berezovska’s body buried near Kyiv. In custody hearings, Reut denied pulling the trigger, accusing colleague Vitalii Zhykovych of the act. The case remains shrouded in uncertainty, with prosecutors exploring multiple motives and possible links to Russian espionage. Both men are held in custody awaiting further investigation.

Ukrainian spy agent says he did not shoot the woman suspected of trying to bomb a Madrid-born billionaire in Monaco, reversing his earlier confession.

The suspect, Anastasiia Berezovska, was killed two days after a pipe bomb exploded outside a Monaco estate. Ukrainian investigators, led first by GUR officer Vladyslav Reut, discovered her body buried in a forested plot west of Kyiv.

Reut had initially admitted to shooting Berezovska, but during a custody hearing in Kyiv he denied pulling the trigger, blaming the action on MUR colleague Vitalii Zhykovych, who formerly worked for the SBU security service.

In court, Reut said he was forced into the murder by Zhykovych and that he would never intentionally kill an innocent civilian, citing his role as a defence operative. Zhykovych’s lawyer dismissed the claim, noting the former officer’s motive was unclear.

The case remains in legal limbo. Prosecutor Dmytro Tkachuk stated that all possible motives—including corruption, organised crime, or a Russian trail—were being examined. Both suspects were denied bail and remanded while the investigation ramps up.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced further details would be released shortly, while the justice system attempts to connect the local case to the broader international fallout from the Monaco bomb plot.
