WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — William Stevenson, the former husband of former first lady Jill Biden, is currently in jail facing first-degree murder charges concerning the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. The tragic incident occurred on December 28, when police discovered Linda unresponsive in their home after a reported domestic dispute.
Stevenson, 77, received a grand jury indictment this week and has been unable to post his $500,000 bail, as details regarding the motive for the crime remain undisclosed. Initial reports indicated that emergency responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.
The Delaware Department of Justice conducted an extensive investigation before pressing charges against Stevenson. It is unclear if he has legal representation.
Jill Biden and William Stevenson were married between 1970 and 1975 before she wed U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977. A representative for the Biden family has stated that Jill Biden will not be commenting on the matter.
Linda Stevenson ran her own bookkeeping business and was remembered fondly in her obituary as a devoted family member and a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, though it notably did not mention her relationship with her husband.
William Stevenson is also credited with establishing the Stone Balloon, a prominent music venue in Newark, Delaware, during the early 1970s.
In a past interview, he criticized Jill Biden, describing their separation as contentious and referring to her as 'bitter.'
