Joy in Morocco and Outrage in Senegal Following AFCON Decision
It was a night of jubilation in Morocco, yet a wave of anger swept through Senegal after the shocking announcement that the Senegalese national football team had been stripped of their continental title and the victory handed to Morocco.
Two months after the contentious final in Rabat, the news arrived late on Tuesday that Morocco had been declared the winners of the Africa Cup of Nations due to an officiating-related protest from Senegalese players who left the pitch, a move deemed as forfeiting the game by the Confederation of African Football (Caf).
As Moroccans took to the streets to celebrate their newly reclaimed championship title, the atmosphere in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, was starkly different. Videos and images captured Moroccan fans driving through Tangier waving flags, honking horns, and celebrating with flares.
Moroccan journalist Jalal Bounour remarked that many fans spent a sleepless night celebrating the news, with statements echoing a sentiment of joy after what they perceived as a rectification of an earlier injustice.
Conversely, Senegalese citizens expressed their disbelief and disappointment in the ruling, labeling it a scandal. Daouda Seck, a young man from Dakar, exclaimed, I’m stunned. Football no longer exists. This is not football. Additionally, the Senegalese government announced it would contest the ruling, accusing Caf of corruption and calling for an independent investigation into the organization.
The aftermath of the decision has raised questions about the integrity of the sport and the governing bodies responsible for overseeing it, igniting passionate discourse across both nations as fans grapple with the unfolding situation.
