In brief

Under the guidance of Chief Terry Paul, Membertou First Nation made history with a groundbreaking investment in Canada's seafood sector, leading to impressive community revitalization efforts and a focus on education and cultural preservation.

The picturesque Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia has long been celebrated for its breathtaking views and captivating road trips. Yet, one community on this island, the Membertou First Nation, is capturing attention in a different light—a story of economic revival and cultural resurgence. At the spearhead of this transformation is Chief Terry Paul, who has recently marked his 40th consecutive year in leadership. In 2021, he orchestrated a significant collaboration among various First Nation groups, culminating in the largest Indigenous investment in Canada's seafood sector. This initiative resulted in the acquisition of 50 percent of Clearwater Seafoods, a Nova Scotia-based company, worth an impressive 1 billion Canadian dollars. But the momentum did not stop there. This past September, Membertou entered a joint venture with another First Nation to acquire one of Canada’s oldest shipyards, further solidifying its foothold in the maritime industry. The community is also engaged in repatriating land, with ambitious plans to expand its territory—something unthinkable in the past when outsiders would often avoid the area. The positive effects of these investments extend beyond economics. Educational achievements within the community are on the rise, with graduation rates improving, while initiatives to revive the Mi’kmaq language are in full swing. Importantly, young people are finding reasons to stay, contributing to a renewed optimism and pride in their heritage. As I drove through the fog on my way to the reserve, a large red sign emerged, proclaiming: “Membertou: Welcoming the World.” This tagline encapsulates the spirit of a community redefining its narrative, paving the way for a bright, self-sustaining future for its people.
