In brief
The gesture further cements the relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang amid ongoing global tensions.
In a notable act of diplomacy, Russian President Vladimir Putin has gifted North Korea's main zoo an extraordinary collection of over 70 animals, including a lion and two brown bears. This donation, facilitated by the Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Alexander Kozlov, was announced via Kozlov's official Telegram account on Wednesday. The shipment, which arrived in the North Korean capital via cargo plane, also included two yaks, five cockatoos, and various species of pheasants and mandarin ducks. The timing of this gift follows recent revelations regarding North Korea's military involvement alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, indicating a potential strengthening of ties amid both countries facing Western sanctions.During the visit to Pyongyang, Minister Kozlov also had the opportunity to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, highlighting the deepening relationship between the two nations. This isn't the first instance of animal diplomacy; earlier this year, Putin presented Kim with 24 pure-bred horses in appreciation for military supplies provided by North Korea. As geopolitical dynamics shift, the alliance between Russia and North Korea appears to be solidifying, largely driven by mutual needs—support for Russia's military efforts in Ukraine, and access to technological advancements from Russia for North Korea's missile program. This partnership was vividly illustrated in June when Putin traveled to North Korea to sign an agreement aimed at mutual protection against external threats.Additionally, during that visit, Putin gave Kim luxury gifts such as a Russian-made Aurus limousine, emphasizing the personal rapport between the two leaders. Kim, known for his affinity towards high-end automobiles, was previously seen in various luxury vehicles, including a Maybach and a Rolls-Royce. Such gestures of goodwill may signify the importance of their partnership as they navigate an increasingly complex international landscape.
