Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin‑Szendi announced that Gripen fighter jets were scrambled on Monday to escort a Wizz Air passenger aircraft flying from London to Sofia after a bomb threat forced the plane to divert to Budapest.
The incident, reported to Xinhua, involved a routine commercial flight en route to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. In the event, Hungarian air force aircraft were dispatched to accompany the compromised airplane and bring it within safe airspace for diversion and further inspection.
Defense Minister Ruszin‑Szendi confirmed the escort operation to Xinhua, noting that Hungarian aircraft were engaged to ensure the safety of the passengers and the integrity of the flight. According to the official statement, the pilots of the Wizz Air aircraft followed the instructions from Hungarian air traffic control and were redirected to Budapest where the plane was received safely.
During the escort, Hungarian Gripen fighter jets maintained a monitoring stance over the aircraft, providing real‑time reassurance to the flight crew and passengers. The operation was carried out in coordination with Budapest authorities, who managed the landing and subsequent checks at the airport.
While the exact nature of the bomb threat was not disclosed by the authorities, the swift deployment of fighter jets is intended to demonstrate the country’s commitment to maintaining flight security and mitigating potential threats to civil aviation.
Hungarian officials reiterated that the safety of passengers and crew was their priority, and the prompt measures taken by the air force ensured a secure resolution of the incident.
Wizz Air, as a major carrier operating in Hungary, continues to serve traffic between European cities. The company has confirmed that the passengers were transported to Budapest safely, and no injuries were reported during the diversion.
Following the arrival at Budapest, the aircraft underwent routine security checks and was cleared by relevant authorities before proceeding to its intended destination. The elucidated procedure highlights the collaborative efforts among Hungarian defense and civilian agencies to counter evolving security threats.
Hungarian authorities have underscored their readiness to engage in protective measures for civil aviation operations, reiterating that the arena of air safety remains paramount even when faced with potential threats such as the bomb alert encountered during the London‑Sofia flight.
The briefing to Xinhua by Defense Minister Ruszin‑Szendi underscored that the operation was executed within standard protocols designed to safeguard civil air travel across Hungary’s airspace.
