In brief

The recent Typhoon Danas, which struck Taiwan’s predominantly populated west coast, caused severe damage, claiming two lives and injuring over 300 individuals.

Typhoon Danas wreaked havoc in Taiwan, particularly along its western coast, after making landfall in Chiayi County late Sunday night, resulting in widespread destruction and losses on Monday. The Central Weather Administration reported that Danas, akin to a Category 1 hurricane, left nearly 400,000 households without power shortly after its arrival. As of mid-Monday, schools and businesses were closed in numerous regions due to storm impacts. This unusual storm path marked a significant event, with Danas being the first typhoon to make landfall in Chiayi County since comprehensive records began in 1958.President Lai Ching-te remarked on social media about the rare trajectory of the storm, indicating imminent adverse effects for the entire island. The confirmed fatalities occurred in Tainan, where a 60-year-old man's dependence on a power supply led to his death due to the outage, and a 69-year-old was killed by a falling tree. As Taiwan recovers, concerns remain regarding the condition of the over 300 individuals reported injured, although government officials have not specified their statuses. Local authorities and emergency services are working diligently to restore power and aid those impacted by the disaster.
