In brief

Shock and devastation hit the town of Mokwa in Nigeria following unprecedented flooding caused by heavy rains, with many families displaced and ongoing rescue efforts.

Floodwaters from torrential overnight rainfall inundated a town in Nigeria on Friday, killing at least 56 people, according to officials, who expressed that the severity of the flooding had taken them by surprise. The deluge displaced numerous families and obliterated homes and businesses in Mokwa, located approximately 235 miles west of the Nigerian capital, Abuja. Mokwa's strategic central location at the junction of three major roads has made it a vibrant market hub, attracting customers from nearby communities. Authorities fear the death toll may increase as floodwaters recede and rescue operations persist.Residents of Mokwa awoke to devastating scenes after the heavy rains. Umar Jamil, who lost his shop in the flood, recounted his experience: “We had to knock on some doors, but before people could escape, the flood had already caught up. We’ve seen many bodies floating on the water, but we couldn’t help.” Habibu Wushishi, a spokesman for Niger State's Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, stated that search efforts for bodies are ongoing, along with damage assessments. Temporary camps have been arranged to accommodate the hundreds of people displaced from their homes. The rainy season in Nigeria often brings floods from April to October, and while the phenomenon is typical, experts have noted that climate change is driving intensifying flood events in recent years. Just last year, over 600 lives were lost and approximately 1.4 million individuals were displaced in what was labeled as the worst flooding in a decade. Although authorities in Mokwa anticipated some flooding during this rainy season, they did not foresee its catastrophic impact, as the town is not situated near a river. Residents, including Jamil, voiced their frustration over the government's slow response to flood warnings. “There have been signs for a long time that a flood might occur here,” said Mr. Jamil, who is 32 years old. “You can only imagine the magnitude of the pain inflicted on our people by this flood.” As emergency efforts continue, the community remains in mourning and grapples with the scale of the disaster's aftermath.
