In brief

U.S. District Judge Rita Lin has issued a preliminary injunction to reinstate $500 million in federal grants to UCLA, which were suspended by the Trump administration over allegations of civil rights violations. The ruling indicates that the administration failed to follow proper procedures as outlined by the Administrative Procedure Act. This comes amid ongoing investigations into college policies on diversity and inclusion.

LOS ANGELES (Civitas) — A significant legal victory for UCLA as a federal judge has mandated the restoration of $500 million in federal grant funding that had been suspended by the Trump administration. U.S. District Judge Rita Lin in San Francisco granted a preliminary injunction indicating that the government likely violated the Administrative Procedure Act by not providing adequate rationale for the funding cuts.

The funds had been frozen under allegations of civil rights violations, specifically regarding issues of antisemitism and affirmative action, leading to a reduction of approximately $584 million in federal grants to the university. In a related ruling, Judge Lin had previously restored $81 million in grants from the National Science Foundation.

In her latest decision, the judge emphasized the government's failure to communicate the specifics of the grant suspensions, using only generalized form letters to inform UCLA. The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding this ruling.

This ongoing conflict reflects a broader trend where the Trump administration has leveraged its control over federal funding to advocate for changes in policies at elite institutions, which the president has criticized for being overly liberal. Investigations surrounding diversity and equity initiatives at these colleges have also been initiated, claiming they unfairly discriminate against white and Asian American students.

UCLA's situation is not unique; other Ivy League schools like Columbia and Brown have successfully negotiated settlements to preserve their funding, amidst similar scrutiny over their responses to campus antisemitism.

At the center of this ruling are critical medical research grants from the National Institutes of Health aimed at breakthroughs in areas such as Parkinson's disease, cancer recovery, and nerve regeneration—vital for American health improvement efforts.
