Billionaire businessman Andrej Babis has achieved a significant win in the recent parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, where his populist party ANO received just under 35% of the vote, translating to 80 seats in the 200-member lower house. This result marks an increase from the 72 seats the party held previously.
Babis, who formerly served as prime minister from 2017 to 2021, celebrated the victory with supporters at the party headquarters in Prague, where he declared, This is a historic success. Holding a Bluetooth speaker that blasted a famous Italian pop song, he embraced the moment with upbeat enthusiasm, stating that it represents the pinnacle of his political career and affirming his commitment to enhance the quality of life in the Czech Republic.
Despite his party's electoral success, Babis faces challenges in forming a government, as ANO did not achieve an overall majority. He has begun negotiations with two smaller right-wing eurosceptic parties that managed to cross the necessary 5% threshold: the Motorists for Themselves, who oppose stringent EU emissions targets, and the Freedom and Direct Democracy party, led by Tomio Okamura.
Given parliamentary realities, Babis will need to form a coalition with these smaller parties to govern effectively.
