In brief
Tunisia’s foreign minister Mohamed Ali Nafti pledged to prevent the country from becoming a transit or settlement point for irregular migrants. He outlined a balanced approach that combines security measures, humanitarian support and cooperation with origin, transit and destination states. The ministry will also work with the International Organization for Migration to facilitate safe voluntary return and reintegration of migrants.
Tunisia’s foreign minister, Mohamed Ali Nafti, announced on Thursday that the country will intensify its efforts to clamp down on migrant smuggling networks and to stop its territory from being used as a transit or landing platform for irregular migrants and asylum‑seekers.
Prioritising Security and Humanitarianism
Nafti, speaking to a private radio station, Mosaique FM, stressed that Tunisia’s commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and protecting its borders is a core element of its migration policy. The minister said the country will not permit its territory to become a transit or settlement country for migrants. He underlined that the approach goes beyond mere security concerns, incorporating humanitarian and development dimensions while respecting the dignity and rights of migrants.
The ministry aims to build a comprehensive and balanced strategy that supports regular and organized migration channels, combats irregular migration, and addresses its root causes. Nafti identified poverty, unemployment and socio‑economic disparities as key drivers behind irregular migration and said the government will address these issues in tandem with border enforcement.
Cooperating with Global Partners
Nafti called for stronger cooperation and solidarity among origin, transit and destination countries. He framed this collaboration on the principle of shared responsibility, insisting that sustainable migration management requires joint action among all stakeholders.
The Tunisian government is working to strengthen coordination with the International Organization for Migration. The ministry highlighted its role in voluntary return assistance and reintegration programmes that help migrants wishing to return to their home countries do so safely and with dignity.
Institutional Commitment and Public Accountability
The Foreign Ministry’s pledge reflects Tunisia’s institutional resolve to reinforce national sovereignty while maintaining a humane stance toward migrants. By balancing security, humanitarian assistance and international cooperation, Tunisia aims to uphold its public accountability to citizens and to its commitments under international migration agreements.
