In brief

Following last year’s festive protests, Shanghai officials clamped down on Halloween activities, showcasing a growing discomfort with public expressions tied to social critique.

The Halloween festivities in Shanghai, which once symbolized a joyous escape and showcased the city's cultural tolerance, took a turn this year as the authorities opted for a crackdown on celebrations. Last year's Halloween was characterized by young people donning costumes that represented their frustrations, such as Covid testing workers and even signs of socio-economic challenges like job advertisements. It became a rare platform for political expression in a society where dissent is often muted.Last year, the Shanghai government hailed these celebrations as an emblem of the city’s “cultural tolerance,” signaling a moment of joy amidst strict social restrictions. They described the absence of dedicated festivals for mere enjoyment and declared Halloween a perfect remedy, promoting it as a public display of collective relief from years of lockdowns. However, as the ambiance of Halloween shifted to one of potential protest, authorities' perspectives changed drastically. This past weekend, police were seen forcibly escorting individuals in costumes, including notable figures like a Buddha and a caricature of Donald Trump, out of public spaces. Amidst apprehensions over impromptu gatherings and past protests against lockdown measures, this precautionary stance marks a greater trend of censorship and restriction on personal expressions in China, even when the expressions are seemingly innocuous or humorous. The events have raised questions about the future of public celebrations in China—where the line between expression and offense grows increasingly blurred. As the government approaches such gatherings with skepticism, many wonder if the joy of community and cultural celebrations will continue to thrive or dissolve into conformity.
