In brief

Recent fighting in Sudan has resulted in hundreds of deaths due to airstrikes and attacks on villages, with both the Sudanese military and paramilitary forces implicated in severe human rights abuses. Activists urge urgent UN involvement to protect civilians as the humanitarian situation deteriorates rapidly.

A significant uptick in violence in Sudan over the past week has led to the deaths of hundreds, with airstrikes and ruthless attacks particularly impacting civilians. As seasonal rains recede, warfare intensifies across regions, with ruthless acts reported from activists and human rights organizations highlighting the grim implications of the ongoing conflict. Switching allegiances, a prominent military commander has left his post, further complicating the already chaotic frontline, where retreating forces are reported to have committed heinous acts such as sexual assault, kidnappings, and murders in several villages. Adding to the turmoil, a military cargo plane crashed in the Darfur region, with reports indicating that two Russian crew members were onboard, highlighting the increasing involvement of foreign contractors in the escalating violence. After enduring significant military losses, Sudan's armed forces appear to have gained an edge against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary entity involved in the 18-month-long conflict. Each side faces scrutiny and allegations from the United States and various rights organizations, particularly the RSF, which has been accused of ethnic cleansing.“The fighting season has just restarted, and both sides want to jostle for an early advantage,” explained Kholood Khair, director of Confluence Advisory, a policy think tank on the ground. These events unfold amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, with over 10 million displaced citizens, widespread famine, and the rapid spread of diseases such as cholera and dengue fever. Activists and humanitarian groups are calling for immediate action from the United Nations to deploy a mission focused on civilian protection as the toll continues to rise.
