An Australian couple's idyllic trip to Venice transformed into an overwhelming ordeal when they were required to remain seated next to a deceased passenger for the last four hours of their lengthy 14-hour flight from Melbourne to Doha.
The tragic incident unfolded when a woman on the flight collapsed, prompting the crew to attempt emergency resuscitation efforts. Mitchell Ring, a fellow passenger, recounted the scene, noting how heartbreaking it was to observe the futile attempts to save the woman's life. “They did everything they could, but unfortunately the lady couldn’t be saved,” he told a local news program, describing the experience as emotionally challenging.
As the situation developed, the flight attendants sought to relocate the body to business class using a wheelchair. However, the body was too large to maneuver through the narrow aisle, leading crew members to make the difficult decision to place the deceased woman in an adjacent seat next to the couple, which significantly impacted their journey.
His wife, Jennifer Colin, shared her distressing experience, emphasizing her discomfort, especially as an anxious flyer. “I’m not a great flyer at the best of times,” she admitted, revealing that she opted to sit in a different row altogether, unable to cope with the situation.
Upon landing, the couple was instructed to remain in their seats while paramedics attended to the situation, covering the body with blankets. Despite the traumatic experience, they expressed disappointment that the airline did not offer any form of support or assistance during or after the incident. In response, Qatar Airways issued a statement confirming they had engaged with the couple to discuss their experiences and address their concerns.
