Tragedy Strikes Australia as Monster Waves Claim Lives
Devastating surf conditions lead to multiple fatalities along the eastern coastline during holiday weekend.
At least six people have been confirmed dead in Australia as perilous waves lashed Sydney and other coastal areas along the eastern shore during the Easter holiday weekend, according to local police reports. A low pressure system initiated powerful surf conditions starting Friday, generating waves that soared taller than 24 feet off the coast of Brisbane in Queensland, as reported by government data.
Warnings of hazardous surf were issued by Australia’s meteorological agency, affecting a significant stretch of coastline from Queensland to New South Wales, which included popular destinations such as Sydney, Byron Bay, and the Gold Coast. Authorities advised the public that these conditions posed serious risks for activities like rock fishing, boating, and swimming.
The hazardous surf warnings remained in effect until Sunday, during which five men tragically drowned in New South Wales, including in the Sydney area, while a sixth victim was reported deceased in Victoria. Authorities revealed that another two individuals were still unaccounted for.
One incident involved a man fishing at Wattamolla, about 20 miles south of Sydney, who was swept into the sea on Sunday morning. Although he met a tragic end, a 14-year-old boy with him was rescued and is in stable condition at a hospital. According to police sources, the five victims in New South Wales were believed to have either fallen or been swept into the ocean while fishing or walking on rocky areas along the coast.
Further complicating the situation, a man remains missing after being swept into the water while traversing rocks at Little Bay Beach in Sydney. In Victoria, the situation was similarly dire, as a woman lost her life on Friday after being knocked off rocks in San Remo, with additional reports of a man and a woman swept away; the woman managed to return to shore, but the man is still missing.
This tragic weekend underscores the dangers posed by coastal activities as community safety organizations, such as Royal Life Saving Australia, reported that 128 people drowned in New South Wales in 2024, with approximately half of those drownings occurring along the state's coastlines.
