Labour MP Mike Amesbury faces suspension after video evidence reveals him throwing punches in a confrontation.
A British lawmaker from the Labour Party, Mike Amesbury, is now facing suspension following a violent incident captured on video. The footage, which emerged over the weekend, shows Amesbury throwing punches at another man, resulting in the individual being knocked to the ground and receiving additional blows while lying there.
The confrontation took place in Frodsham, a small town in northern England, late Friday night. In one of the clips, Amesbury can be heard shouting, “You won’t ever threaten the M.P. again.” The video gained traction quickly, being reported by various media outlets, including the BBC.
In response to the incident, a Labour Party spokesperson confirmed that Amesbury, 55, is assisting police with their investigations. The party has decided to administratively suspend Amesbury’s membership while these inquiries are underway.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after viewing the footage, labeled the events "shocking" and emphasized the rapid suspension of Amesbury. “There is now a police investigation, so I can't provide further comments at this stage,” he stated.
The Cheshire Constabulary confirmed that a 55-year-old man, referring to Amesbury, was voluntarily interviewed regarding the incident and subsequently released while further inquiries continue.
Following the incident, Amesbury acknowledged his involvement and claimed he felt threatened after an evening out with friends. He conveyed that he would cooperate fully with the police but chose not to make additional public statements at this time. Despite the situation, he affirmed his intentions to remain active in Parliament.
