Chris Brown Granted Bail Amid Assault Charges in London
R&B star Chris Brown to return to tour after being released on $6 million bail for grievous bodily harm charges.
Chris Brown, the popular R&B artist, has been released from custody by a London court after being charged with grievous bodily harm stemming from an incident in a nightclub. The 36-year-old singer was arrested last week at a hotel in Manchester and is accused of attacking a music producer with a tequila bottle at the Tape London nightclub back on February 19, 2023.
During a bail hearing at Southwark Crown Court in South London, lawyers for Mr. Brown successfully requested his release, which was granted by the judge. The London Metropolitan Police confirmed that conditions were placed on his bail, allowing him to start an international tour set to kick off in Amsterdam on June 8. His tour will encompass various European nations including Germany, Ireland, France, and Portugal, before concluding in the United States.
Judge Tony Baumgartner, who presided over the hearing, specified that Mr. Brown must surrender his passport whenever he is not on tour and is prohibited from visiting Tape London. To secure his bail, Mr. Brown’s representatives agreed to a £5 million ($6.7 million) security deposit, which could be forfeited if he violates any of the imposed conditions.
At this time, Mr. Brown has yet to enter a plea regarding the case. Under British law, details that could influence an upcoming trial, including anything that might sway a jury, remain under wraps. In conjunction with Mr. Brown, fellow American rapper Omololu Akinlolu, known as HoodyBaby, was also charged with grievous bodily harm related to the same nightclub incident just two days later. Both artists are scheduled to appear before the court again on June 20.
