Pope Francis Hospitalized Again, Facing Ongoing Health Concerns
The 88-year-old pontiff is receiving treatment for bronchitis in a Roman hospital, raising alarms about his health status.
Pope Francis has been hospitalized for bronchitis treatment at Policlinico Agostino Gemelli, according to a Vatican statement issued Friday. At 88 years of age, the pontiff's health has drawn attention in recent years, with this latest hospitalization reigniting worries about his wellbeing.
The Vatican reported that he had kept his schedule prior to hospitalization, meeting with dignitaries including Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico and CNN's CEO Mark Thompson. Last month, to accommodate numerous pilgrims attending the Jubilee celebrations, the pope celebrated Mass outdoors due to overwhelming turnout, highlighting his active participation despite health challenges.
Earlier in February, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis was experiencing bronchitis, prompting him to shift his audiences to the Casa Santa Marta instead of the more public Apostolic Palace. His health has been in decline over recent weeks, evidenced by respiratory issues that have led to aides reading his addresses at public events.
In his youth, Pope Francis had part of a lung removed, and in recent years, he has faced multiple health setbacks, including hospitalization for bronchitis in 2023 and for hernia surgery shortly thereafter. He has also dealt with injuries from falls within his residence, underscoring ongoing mobility challenges that have necessitated a cane or wheelchair.
During a recent general audience, the pope visibly struggled with his bronchitis, requesting an assistant to read his remarks in his stead, a poignant reflection of his current health struggles.
