Michael Paul Brown, a former US Army service member, allegedly opened fire in the popular local bar on August 1, resulting in the deaths of 64-year-old bartender Nancy Lauretta Kelley and three patrons: 59-year-old Daniel Edwin Baillie, 70-year-old David Allen Leach, and 74-year-old Tony Wayne Palm.

After the shooting, a massive manhunt was launched by local, state, and federal authorities, focusing on the wooded areas near the city of nearly 10,000 residents. Reports indicate that Brown fled the establishment wearing only black shorts, shedding his clothing in a bid to evade capture.
