Maximo Napa Castro, 61, set off from Marcona for a short fishing trip on December 7, but nature's wrath silenced his planned adventure when a storm forced his boat far off course, leaving him stranded.
During the ordeal, Castro faced starvation and dehydration. After ten days, supplies dwindled rapidly, leading him to catch rainwater and consume whatever he could find, including roaches, birds, and eventually, sea turtles. His undying determination to return to his family, including dreams of his two-month-old granddaughter and thoughts of his mother, motivated him to endure the grueling conditions. His mother's optimism clashed with her dwindling hope over his lengthy absence, an emotional struggle shared by many families facing loss at sea.
The crucial moment arrived when the Ecuadorian patrol vessel Don F spotted him over 1,000 kilometers from shore, suffering from extreme dehydration and health concerns.
