**Gang Leader Assassinated in Courtroom: A Security Breach Stuns Sri Lanka**

A brazen shooting at a courthouse in Colombo has claimed the life of a prominent gang leader, raising alarms over security vulnerabilities.

The murder of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, amid a backdrop of escalating gang violence, has ignited discussions on the effectiveness of law enforcement and courtroom security in Sri Lanka.

Authorities are investigating a shocking incident involving the assassination of a notorious gang leader, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, also known as Ganemulle Sanjeewa, while he was in court facing numerous criminal charges. A gunman disguised as a lawyer stormed the courtroom and fired a gun that was allegedly smuggled inside a hollowed-out book by an accomplice who remains at large. Samararathne, who had been in custody since September 2023, sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital.

Despite the presence of a dozen police officers who had accompanied him to the courthouse, the gunman managed to make a swift escape. Authorities later apprehended the assailant, who has been reported under various names, indicating a possible history of criminal activity. Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman named Pinpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi has been identified as the accomplice suspected of orchestrating the gun smuggling.

In response to this violent episode, law enforcement is actively seeking information about Sewwandi while also detaining a policeman and a van driver believed to have aided the attack. The shocking incident comes amidst a worrying rise in gang-related violence in Sri Lanka, with at least nine fatalities reported this year due to gang rivalries.

During a parliamentary session on the day of the shooting, lawmakers voiced their concerns about growing gang violence, with one opposition MP labeling it a "major security issue." Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa reiterated the government's commitment to curbing organized crime, stating that recent events necessitate serious measures against violent gangs.

This incident has triggered a review of security protocols in courthouses, signaling a shift in policy, including the potential deployment of armed guards for high-risk cases. Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara confirmed that existing regulations restricting armed security in courthouses would be evaluated to enhance safety. As investigations continue, the wider implications for societal safety and law enforcement credibility remain to be seen.
