Firefighters in Cape Town have faced an intense challenge as a wildfire in Table Mountain National Park has escalated, moving towards the city itself. As authorities reported on Wednesday, the wildfire, which has been raging for several days, gained dangerous momentum overnight due to gusty winds pushing flames closer to Cape Town's central business district.
Edward Bosch, a representative from the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, relayed that while the fire has grown in size, assessments regarding the full extent of damage and affected properties were ongoing. “This blaze is extensive,” Bosch stated, although emphasizing that there has been no immediate risk to downtown Cape Town as of Wednesday morning. However, he warned that the situation remains dynamic and could shift depending on environmental conditions.
In response to the wildfire, many popular trails within the national park have been closed to prevent hikers from entering unsafe areas. By Monday, the fire had already scorched approximately 148 acres. The park management has expressed concern over hikers who have ventured into these prohibited zones.
Alongside the Table Mountain incident, a second fire in the Red Hill area has further complicated firefighting efforts. Despite the severity of both blazes, evacuation orders were not issued at this time. On the ground, firefighting teams have deployed over 80 personnel from various agencies, and aerial support has commenced, with helicopters engaged in water-bombing operations to control the flames.
The effects of wildfires in the region have long been a pressing concern for Cape Town residents living near the mountain. To mitigate future fire risks, ecologists have urged park officials to implement more frequent controlled burn initiatives to curb the spread of uncontrollable wildfires in the area.
