Tragic Wildfires Claim Lives in South Korea Amidst Evacuations
At least two confirmed fatalities, hundreds displaced as wildfires ravage southeastern regions.
Wildfires have wreaked havoc in South Korea, claiming the lives of at least two firefighters and prompting mass evacuations in various regions. According to local news agency Yonhap, the deceased were found in Sancheong County, located in the country's southeast, where fierce fires forced the evacuation of over 200 residents from eight villages. Two additional firefighters remain unaccounted for as flames spread rapidly, leading to a national disaster declaration by the government at 18:00 local time (09:00 GMT).
Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for all available resources to be deployed to control the fire before nightfall. However, strong winds hindered firefighting efforts about 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Seoul. Meanwhile, in Uiseong County, another wildfire has displaced more than 400 residents. With the Korea Forest Service issuing severe wildfire warnings in twelve areas, including major urban centers like Busan and Daejeon, the situation remains critical as officials work to contain the destructive blazes.
