The incident gained public attention after a video showing the boys engaging in this act circulated on social media.
Authorities confirmed that the 17-year-olds were apprehended shortly after the incident, which took place in February. Fortunately, officials stated that there was no evidence anyone consumed the contaminated broth. Haidilao has since expressed remorse over the occurrence and took immediate actions to rectify the situation, including the replacement of all hotpot equipment and a thorough disinfection of affected crockery and utensils.
Despite the event happening late last month, Haidilao management only became aware of the issue when it began trending online. Recognizing the emotional distress this incident has caused, Haidilao announced that customers dining at the affected outlet between February 24 and March 8 will receive a full refund along with additional cash compensation up to ten times their original bill.
