Tragic Shooting Claims Lives of Seven Young People in Guanajuato Church Event

In a shocking incident that underscores the escalating violence fueled by drug cartels in Mexico, seven young individuals lost their lives during a Catholic Church festivity in the village of San Bartolo de Berrios, located in the central state of Guanajuato. The unfortunate event transpired in the early hours of Monday when armed assailants targeted a group of attendees who lingered in the village's central square after the concluded celebration.

Witnesses reported that the gunmen arrived in vehicles and indiscriminately opened fire, unleashing a barrage of gunfire that resonated through the tranquil village. Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack, although signs left nearby suggest the involvement of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel. This type of violence is typically seen in locations such as nightclubs and bars; however, targeting a church event is notably rare.

The Episcopal Conference of Mexico condemned the attack, emphasizing that the country cannot turn a blind eye to the growing violence that plagues communities. The local archbishop, Jaime Calderón, attributed the incident to territorial disputes between rival drug cartels operating in the region. Guanajuato has seen a staggering number of homicides, totaling 2,597 in the past year, making it the most violent state in Mexico.

Both the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel and its rival, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, are engaged in brutal turf wars, extending their violent tactics to instill fear within local populations. This aggression includes stealing fuel from pipelines, known as huachicoleo, which has become a lucrative source of income for these organizations.

Residents of San Bartolo de Berrios reported hearing nearly 100 gunshots in a matter of minutes, as the aftermath revealed a horrifying scene with seven young victims — including two under the age of 18 — lying lifeless on the ground. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended following the incident, leaving the community in a state of disbelief and mourning.
