Jihadist Motivation Investigated in Munich Car Attack Injuring 36

Prosecutors reveal indications of religious motives behind the Munich incident, with a suspect linked to previous attacks.

An Afghan man, identified as Farhad N, has been arrested for driving into a crowd in Munich, resulting in 36 injuries, and appears to have had a religious motivation, according to prosecutors.

An Afghan national, arrested following a shocking car attack in Munich, has sparked concerns over possible jihadist motivations. Prosecutors noted that the 24-year-old suspect, Farhad N, shouted "Allahu Akbar" upon his arrest, suggesting a religiously motivated assault. This attack transpired near the central station during a trade union protest, leaving a two-year-old girl and several others in critical condition among the 36 injured.

In a press conference, Munich public prosecutor Gabriele Tilmann elaborated on the case, indicating that the suspect deliberately used his Mini Cooper to ram into the crowd. Despite his alleged motivations, authorities clarified that there is currently no direct link between Farhad N and any jihadist group, and he appears to have acted independently.

Farhad N, who entered Germany in 2016, had his asylum application denied but was permitted to stay through a valid residence and work permit. He has no prior criminal record and worked as a store detective, not as an offender, contrary to earlier reports.

Regarding the broader context, this attack occurred just days before Germany's federal elections, underscoring ongoing public debates about immigration and security, particularly as two previous high-profile attackers also hailed from Afghanistan. The incident drew responses from various officials, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who lamented the brutality of the assault.

As the situation develops, investigators continue to look for further details, while emergency services remain on high alert in Munich and surrounding areas. Farhad N is scheduled to appear in court, where the next steps in the legal process will be determined.
