Heroic Italian Sniffer Dog Murdered With Poisonous Treats
A beloved dog known for saving lives was tragically killed, raising outcry for justice and animal protection.
An Italian sniffer dog renowned for his life-saving work has tragically lost his life, igniting widespread outrage and calls for justice. Bruno, a seven-year-old bloodhound, was celebrated for his remarkable career in which he located nine missing individuals. His actions earned him accolades, including recognition from Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who expressed her sorrow over the “vile, cowardly, unacceptable” act.
Bruno's trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, revealed that he discovered his beloved dog in distress within his kennel at the Endas search and rescue training center in Taranto, Puglia. After the discovery of Bruno's demise, Caressa emotionally recounted losing a companion he regarded as a brother. He strongly believes the heinous act was potentially a revenge killing due to Bruno’s success in dismantling illegal dog fighting operations.
A joint investigation by the Italian police and prosecutor's office has been launched, with Caressa confidently asserting that he is aware of who is responsible for the horrific deed. Prior to his dog’s death, he reportedly received death threats, affirming to local media that this wasn’t a random act but rather a sinister vendetta. “It was done for money and revenge,” he stated.
Michela Vittoria Brambilla, an Italian MP and animal rights campaigner, has advocated for the pursuance of justice for Bruno. She pointed out that the killing could be linked to the dog’s previous work in aiding authorities to seize dogs involved in fighting. Following recent legislative changes, those found guilty of torturing animals could face up to four years in prison and hefty fines. Brambilla urged for the implementation of this new law due to the cruel nature of Bruno’s death, which involved severe internal injuries from the nail-filled sausages. “We owe it to this noble animal,” she emphasized in her statement.
