Pope Francis Leaves Hospital After Heartfelt Recovery
Pope Francis returns to the Vatican after health scare, receiving warm cheers from supporters.
Pope Francis has made a remarkable return to public life as he appeared from the window of the Gemelli hospital in Rome on Sunday, following his admission on February 14. The 88-year-old pontiff addressed cheering crowds, delivering a blessing for the first time since he was hospitalized. Moments later, he was officially discharged, though he will be required to take at least two months of rest at the Vatican.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the medical professionals overseeing the Pope’s treatment, reported that the pontiff faced "two very critical episodes" during his hospital stay, instances in which his "life was in danger." Despite these challenges, Dr. Alfieri confirmed that Pope Francis was never intubated and remained alert throughout his care. Although he is still not fully healed, the doctors are optimistic about his steady recovery, noting that he no longer suffers from pneumonia.
Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, expressed his joy about the Pope's discharge, stating, "It's a great gift to the city and to the world... we support him and feel really close to him." As news of the Pope’s return spread, crowds gathered outside the hospital, eagerly awaiting the moment he appeared. Emotional reactions poured in from onlookers, including Bishop Larry Kulick from Pennsylvania, who felt "overjoyed to see him," and Ilaria Della Bidia, a local singer, who described the atmosphere as "like heaven."
Additionally, Ana Matos, who had traveled from Brazil, expressed her elation, sharing that she arrived just in time to witness the Pope's appearance and felt joy akin to that of a new mother. Despite his short public appearances during his hospitalization, including a solitary photograph of him praying released earlier, the Pope's voice was heard this month during an audio message played in St Peter's Square, where he thanked the community for their prayers.
Having led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years, Pope Francis has faced various health challenges throughout his lifetime, including the surgical removal of part of one of his lungs in his youth, which has made him susceptible to infections. However, with his latest recovery, the pontiff is hopeful to resume his duties as soon as possible, a reflection of both his resilience and the deep connection he shares with millions around the world.
