Aid Workers Tragedy: Eight Charity Members Killed in Gaza Airstrike
Tragic airstrike in Gaza claims the lives of humanitarian workers, igniting further tensions in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The UK-registered charity said that its team, composed of volunteers and journalists, was specifically targeted on Saturday. The Israeli military responded by stating they aimed at “two terrorists” involved in drone operations, emphasizing that further “terrorists” were targeted who approached the area. However, the charity denied such claims, asserting that their members were not involved in any hostilities.
Qasim Rashid Ahmad, the charity's founder, shared with the BBC that the team was executing humanitarian activities to set up tents and promote their initiatives when the tragic event unfolded. Initially, two cameramen were struck when returning to their vehicle, followed by additional members who rushed to assist, only to be targeted by an Israeli drone.
The Hamas-run health ministry reported that several other individuals were injured and taken to the nearby Indonesian Hospital. Hazem Qassem, a spokesperson for Hamas, condemned the strikes as a "horrific massacre" that specifically targeted humanitarian workers and media personnel.
Despite a ceasefire agreement in effect since January, the future remains precarious with tensions escalating and fears of renewed conflict looming, as the war ignited by Hamas's October 7 attack has led to significant casualties on both sides. The Israeli response has resulted in over 48,300 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
