At least 14 fatalities reported in catastrophic South Korea floods and landslides
Severe rainfall has led to flooding and landslides in South Korea, with rescue teams actively searching for missing persons.
On Sunday, harrowing footage from Gapyeong, a resort town battling the aftermath, depicted residents traversing thick mud to access evacuation shelters. Meanwhile, in the Chungcheon region, an alarming landslide buried an entire village, with videos capturing the scene of devastation.
Since the heavy rains commenced last Wednesday, close to 10,000 residents have fled their homes. More than 41,000 households faced power outages as flooding impacted infrastructure significantly. Although the downpour has decreased in the hardest-hit southern and central parts, additional rainfall is anticipated in Seoul and northern regions.
The destruction is particularly concentrated in the south, where six fatalities were recorded in Sancheong county. The northern mountainous region near Seoul also reported casualties, with two fatalities and four missing individuals in Gapyeong alone. Approximately 63 people have been rescued, with 285 evacuating the area, according to Gyeonggi Province Fire Department reports. A state of alert for potential landslides has been declared in several regions, prompting the government to initiate a multi-agency recovery response.
