Political Turmoil: South Korea’s Court Reinstates PM Han Duck-soo as Acting Leader

Constitutional court overturns impeachment, reigniting political tensions in Seoul.

Amidst ongoing political instability, South Korea’s constitutional court has reinstated Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who briefly served as acting president after a failed martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

South Korea's ongoing political crisis has taken another turn as the constitutional court ruled seven to one in favor of reinstating Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, dismissing the impeachment that had sidelined him for nearly two weeks. Han stepped into the role of acting president in December 2022 following the suspension and impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, triggered by Yoon's controversial attempt to impose martial law.

However, tensions escalated rapidly as Han himself faced impeachment from lawmakers, who were frustrated with his actions that included blocking judicial appointments that could have potentially influenced Yoon's impeachment proceedings. After two weeks of political limbo, the court's decision marks a significant moment, with the Prime Minister expressing gratitude for the ruling and pledging to restore order within the government.

The court's current focus now shifts to the impending verdict on President Yoon’s impeachment, which had been submitted by lawmakers on December 14. This decision holds the power to either reinstate Yoon into his executive role or remove him entirely, necessitating a new presidential election within 60 days. The public has been vocal, and nationwide protests have erupted both in support of and against Yoon, reflecting the deep divisions within the populace.

Political analyst Leif-Eric Easley states that the court's decision to side with Han signals an attempt at maintaining impartiality and stability in an increasingly chaotic political landscape. He suggests this ruling acts as a cautionary note to opposition parties who have aggressively pursued impeachment motions, with all nine challenges previously ruled on by the court having ultimately been dismissed.

Easley notes, "Reinstating Han could be viewed as a strategic move in preparation for the court’s more consequential ruling on Yoon's fate," highlighting the political undertones underlying these legal decisions. As South Korea braces for further developments, the nation stands at a precarious crossroads, awaiting the court's next critical decision.
