U.K. Government's Secret Resettlement of Afghans Exposed After Data Breach
The revelation of a major data leak regarding Afghan allies sparks scrutiny over a covert resettlement initiative.
The British Defense Ministry recently revealed a shocking incident where the personal details of over 18,000 Afghans, who served alongside British troops prior to the Taliban's resurgence, were inadvertently disclosed through an email sent outside official channels in 2022. This critical lapse remained undisclosed for a considerable period, shielded by a "super injunction" obtained by the previous government, which restricted media coverage and public discussion surrounding the breach.
On Tuesday, Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed the exposure during a statement in Parliament, which revealed that the extent of the breach was only recognized in August 2023, following mentions of nine individuals on social media. In light of this, a clandestine resettlement scheme, known as the Afghan Response Route, was developed by the then-Conservative government. So far, approximately 4,500 Afghans have safely arrived in the U.K. through this initiative, costing around $537 million, with an additional 600 expected to arrive along with their families.
While Healey announced the termination of the resettlement program and the release of a report about the situation, he stated that there was minimal evidence to suggest that the Taliban intended to retaliate against those whose data was exposed. This admission comes amidst increasing scrutiny regarding immigration policies in the U.K. and the challenges faced by individuals formerly allied with British forces in Afghanistan. The controversy surrounding super injunctions has also intensified, demanding a closer look at press freedom and accountability in government operations.
