Hungary's New Gender Mandate: A Constitutional Shift
Hungary solidifies a strict gender binary through recent constitutional amendments emphasizing traditional values.
In a move celebrated by conservative supporters, the Hungarian Parliament passed a sweeping constitutional amendment on Monday that stipulates all citizens must be categorized strictly as male or female. This decision, pushed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, aims to reinforce traditional gender roles in Hungary, which Orban argues are under threat from what he terms “gender madness.”
The amendments come amid increasing tensions within Hungary, as the government faces a surge in economic difficulties and mounting opposition ahead of the upcoming elections in 2026. Orban used the opportunity to rally his conservative base by stating that “the winds have shifted in our favor” following the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States.
In addition to defining gender, the amendment also includes measures designed to “protect” children’s physical and moral development, echoing recent legislation that prohibits pride parades, which the government has labeled as detrimental to youth welfare.
Moreover, the Constitution has been updated to allow the state to revoke dual citizenship from individuals classified as threats to national security, a decision likely targeting critics who have left Hungary and adopted citizenship in other countries. Orban characterized the overhaul of legislation as a much-needed “spring cleaning” to rid the country of unwelcome influences.
