Trump to Push for Ukraine's Territorial Gains in Upcoming Putin Summit

Donald Trump announced his intention to negotiate the return of occupied Ukrainian territories during a meeting with Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the importance of Kyiv's involvement in any agreements reached.

Former President Donald Trump revealed his agenda for an anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, set to take place in Alaska. During a recent news conference, Trump stated, "Russia's occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They occupied prime territory. We're going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine." He emphasized that the discussions would serve as a "feel-out meeting" where he aims to persuade Putin to cease hostilities in the region.

Trump mentioned that there could potentially be "some swapping, changes in land" during the negotiations. He also reassured that he would update European allies if Putin proposes a "fair deal." Additionally, Trump expressed his commitment to prioritize communication with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, assuring him that he would first consult Kyiv regarding any developments. "I'll call him first ... I'll call him after, and I may say, 'lots of luck, keep fighting,' or I may say, 'we can make a deal,'" he remarked.

The announcement of the meeting coincided with the deadline Trump set for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face additional U.S. sanctions. In response to the summit, President Zelensky cautioned that any agreements made without Ukrainian input would be considered "dead decisions." European allies of Ukraine echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that any peace negotiations must include Kyiv's participation to be viable.
