Paramilitary Forces Strike Again: Over 100 Civilians Killed in Sudan
A shocking report details the massacre of civilians by Rapid Support Forces in Nahud, escalating the ongoing civil war's horrors.
Paramilitary forces have launched yet another brutal attack in southern Sudan, resulting in the death of over 100 civilians, according to an alarming report from the Sudan Doctors Network. This incident took place in the city of Nahud on a Thursday night and has been described as a “large-scale massacre” attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.). Tragically, among the deceased are at least 21 children and 15 women. The incident highlights the ongoing violence and human rights abuses in the region, particularly amid the escalating civil war.
The offensive by the Rapid Support Forces targeted the city, previously held by the Sudanese military, as part of their strategy to control key areas connecting Darfur—a region that has become a stronghold for the paramilitary group. In a statement, the U.N. human rights chief, Volker Türk, expressed grave concerns about the rising civilian death toll in the conflict, with reports indicating at least 542 civilians have perished in recent weeks, emphasizing that the actual numbers could be even higher. “The horror unfolding in Sudan knows no bounds,” Türk stated, acknowledging the grim realities on the ground.
As the Sudanese military managed to push the Rapid Support Forces out of the capital, Khartoum, in March, the paramilitary group has declared its own authority in controlled areas and intensified aggressive operations to seize all of Darfur. In addition to the shocking death toll, reports from the doctors' group indicate R.S.F. fighters have also looted essential resources, including a medical supply warehouse, pharmacies, markets, and even a hospital.
In the face of such persistent atrocities, the international community is urged to act promptly in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the relentless bloodshed in Sudan.
