Aga Khan, Visionary Philanthropist and Spiritual Leader, Passes Away at 88

The Aga Khan Development Network mourns the loss of its founder, Prince Karim Aga Khan, who passed away peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the iconic spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims and a renowned philanthropist, died on Saturday at the age of 88. His passing was confirmed by the Aga Khan Development Network, which stated that he "passed away peacefully" surrounded by family. The Aga Khan, who was the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslims with roots tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad, was born in Switzerland and held British citizenship, living a life of both opulence and devotion.

King Charles III expressed his deep sorrow upon learning of the Aga Khan's death, highlighting their long-standing friendship. The Aga Khan's charitable legacy includes the establishment of numerous educational, health, and cultural initiatives. His foundations managed hundreds of important projects, mainly in developing regions across the globe.

Recognized as a major figure in both philanthropy and horse racing, the Aga Khan was a successful businessman with an estimated fortune of $1 billion in 2008. His passion for horse-breeding led to the development of celebrated racehorses, most notably Shergar, whose legacy remains vivid to this day. Through his contributions and dedication, the Aga Khan made a significant impact on countless lives, leaving a lasting legacy for the Ismaili community and beyond.

The Aga Khan Development Network extended its "condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide," reaffirming its commitment to continue working on projects that enhance lives across diverse backgrounds, just as he envisioned.
