Unidentified Drones Reported Over US Air Bases in the UK
The USAF has confirmed sightings of numerous unidentified drones over three airbases in Britain, raising concerns regarding airspace security.
Numerous unidentified drones have been spotted hovering over three key United States Air Force (USAF) installations in the United Kingdom, raising security concerns. The sightings occurred from Wednesday to Friday over RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk, with the USAF acknowledging that "small unmanned aerial systems" were involved.
A USAF representative stated that the incidents are under investigation, and it remains undetermined whether the drones pose a threat. They chose not to specify whether any defensive measures were enacted but emphasized their right to safeguard military installations.
"Small unmanned aerial systems [UASs] were confirmed in the vicinity of RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell, with varying numbers, sizes, and configurations observed. These UASs were closely monitored, and installation leadership assessed that none of the sightings affected base inhabitants or critical infrastructure," the spokesperson stated.
In terms of operational security, the USAF is cautious about revealing comprehensive details about its protective strategies but is actively collaborating with local authorities to secure airspace and ensure safety at its locations.
RAF Mildenhall supports the USAF's 100th Air Refueling Wing, while RAF Lakenheath is home to F-35A and F-15E fighter jets. RAF Feltwell primarily manages logistics and housing for military personnel.
The British Ministry of Defence, which oversees these airbases, assured that it prioritizes security at defense sites, citing existing counter-drone capabilities in place to address potential threats. However, it refrained from providing additional information regarding security procedures.
As the situation develops, the USAF and UK authorities continue to monitor the airspace surrounding these critical military bases.
