First Female Umpire Makes History in Major League Baseball
Jen Pawol breaks barriers as MLB's inaugural female umpire during regular season game.
Jen Pawol has made history by becoming the first female umpire to officiate a Major League Baseball (MLB) game in the league's 150-year existence. The 48-year-old umpired first base during a match on Saturday involving the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves held in Atlanta, Georgia. "I understand the significance of this moment," she shared with MLB.com, visibly emotional as she was greeted by cheers and applause upon taking the field. Pawol was moved by the support from the audience, noting, "It felt incredible as fans began clapping and chanting my name."
As supporters waved banners such as "Pawol making HERstory" and "the time has come for one & all to play ball," the significance of the moment was not lost. After the game, she made a memorable gesture by donating her umpire hat to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Jen is scheduled to umpire again on Saturday night for third base and will be behind home plate on Sunday, where all eyes will focus on her as she calls balls and strikes in the final match of the series.
With over 30 years of experience and 1,200 games under her belt in the minor leagues, Pawol hails from New Jersey. Her entry into MLB comes 28 years after the NBA appointed its first female referee, and 10 years after the NFL followed suit. However, the National Hockey League is yet to see a female referee. Pawol's debut is celebrated by a large contingent of family and friends in attendance, reflecting the evolution of gender representation in professional sports.
