Tragic Loss: Brett Gardner's Son Dies from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Brett Gardner, former New York Yankees player, mourns the sudden loss of his son Miller, who succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning while vacationing with family in Costa Rica.

Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, tragically passed away due to carbon monoxide poisoning while on a family vacation in Costa Rica last month. Official reports from Costa Rican authorities confirmed that the cause of death was linked to high levels of carbon monoxide in his blood, as indicated by a toxicology report identifying a carboxyhemoglobin saturation of 64 percent, a severely dangerous level.

Randall Zúñiga, director of the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency, shared that the autopsy revealed indications of carbon monoxide poisoning on Miller's organs, and other tests conducted showed no traces of drugs. The family, who stayed at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, indicated that several family members fell ill during their stay, leading to Miller's fatal condition.

In a heartfelt statement shared by the Yankees, the Gardner family noted, “He passed away peacefully in his sleep.” They highlighted Miller’s love for sports and the outdoors, stating he enjoyed football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and spending time with loved ones.

Brett Gardner, who played for the Yankees from 2008 until his retirement in 2021, is admired not only for his achievements on the field but also for his resilience in facing personal adversity. The family is also blessed with another son, Hunter, who is 16 years old.

The resort did not comment following the release of the toxicology results, which brought the authorities’ investigation into the tragic incident to a close. This heartbreaking event has pulled at the heartstrings of many within the sports community as they rally around the grieving Gardner family.
