**Italian Village Takes a Humorous Stand Against Healthcare Shortcomings**

A small town in Calabria has issued a playful decree urging residents to avoid becoming ill to spotlight healthcare issues.

The mayor of Belcastro aims to draw attention to the lack of medical services in the region while employing wit to address serious problems.

In a provocative yet humorous move, the mayor of Belcastro, Italy, has taken an unconventional approach by issuing a decree instructing residents to steer clear of serious illness. This curious directive comes as a response to the glaring inadequacies in the local healthcare system affecting the village of approximately 1,200 people, located in Calabria, one of Italy's poorest regions.

Mayor Antonio Torchia stated that residents should "avoid contracting any illness that may require emergency medical assistance," highlighting the desperate need for better medical care. The village is home to a significant elderly population, with nearly half of its residents over the age of 65. The nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) facility is over 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) away, reachable only via a slow road that permits speeds of just 30 km/h (18 mph).

In addition to the A&E's inaccessibility, the local doctor’s office is sporadically open, often closed during weekends, holidays, and after-hours, creating a precarious situation for those in need of urgent care. Mayor Torchia expressed his frustration, explaining that the journey to medical assistance feels risky, as the roads may pose more danger than any potential illness itself.

Alongside the directive against serious illness, residents are advised to refrain from activities that could result in injury—such as practicing sports, traveling, or even leaving home frequently—in favor of resting most of the time. The enforcement of these rules remains uncertain, raising questions about their practicality.

Calabria has struggled with healthcare challenges for years, exacerbated by political mismanagement and mafia interference. Since 2009, the region has seen the closure of 18 hospitals, forcing many residents to seek medical attention outside their home area. The Italian government has attempted to address these issues, even enlisting 497 doctors from Cuba to support the beleaguered healthcare system.

Local residents have praised Mayor Torchia for using this quirky decree to bring attention to a pressing issue in their community. He has effectively provoked discussions aimed at seeking solutions for the systemic healthcare problems in the area, hoping to shake the public consciousness regarding the significant challenges faced by the people of Belcastro and Calabria at large.
