In a concerning development in Jammu and Kashmir, the deaths of at least 17 individuals, including 12 children, are under investigation following reports of collapsed health conditions linked to potential contamination. The tragic events unfolded in Badhal village from December 7 to January 19, leading health officials to suspect the consumption of tainted food or water might be the underlying cause.
Local health authorities reported symptoms resembling food poisoning, with victims initially experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throats, and breathing difficulties before abruptly losing consciousness. Dr. AS Bhatia, a local hospital chief, stated that these alarming health patterns prompted immediate action from the state and federal government. The village has been declared a containment zone, and investigations are being conducted by a special team including police, pathologists, and health specialists.
Initial findings indicated that a local spring might be the source of contamination, as recent tests revealed pesticide traces in the water. Consequently, residents have been advised against consuming water from this source, and all edible substances from afflicted households have been confiscated. Authorities are monitoring close contacts of the deceased, while local residents have been instructed to consume only government-supplied food and water.
