King Misuzulu's Third Marriage Faces Legal Challenge

Zulu monarch Misuzulu kaZwelithini confronts obstacles as court ruling allows him to proceed with his third marriage.

The ongoing legal struggles surrounding King Misuzulu highlight both personal and political tensions within the royal family.

Despite the best efforts of Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela, the first wife of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, to halt his intended third marriage, a court ruling has allowed the king to move forward with his plans. The queen sought legal intervention ahead of the wedding, which was speculated to occur later this week. However, the king reportedly communicated via a letter, stating that the ceremony could be canceled due to factors "beyond the control of the royal house."

In South Africa, polygamous marriages are legally recognized only if formalized through customary wedding procedures. The current issues arise as King Misuzulu, who has been on the throne for just over two years, has been embroiled in various controversies. Although the monarch holds no formal political power, he wields significant social influence, supported by a lavish government-funded budget.

Queen Ntokozo had entered the legal arena, asserting that the king remains bound by their civil marriage, which requires dissolution or transformation into a traditional marriage for him to lawfully take additional wives. Judge Bongani Mngadi dismissed her application to impede the king’s marriage to Nomzamo Myeni, pointing out that she had previously consented to her husband's potential polygamous decisions.

Tensions further escalated when it was revealed that the couple had discussed converting their civil union to a traditional marriage last year. However, since then, King Misuzulu has reportedly pursued a divorce, citing a breakdown in their relationship. Contradictory reports have emerged, indicating that the bride-to-be, Nomzamo Myeni, remained unaware of the alleged cancellation claims and believed the wedding was still scheduled to happen.

Queen Ntokozo did not stand alone in her legal push; the current king's controversial decisions since accession, such as the unexpected dismissal of the Ingonyama Trust board and intrigue surrounding his recent firings of close aides, have led to growing scrutiny. Additionally, questions about King Misuzulu's legitimacy persist, with ongoing legal disputes challenging his royal status.

King Misuzulu’s reign has continued to unravel complexities that intertwine personal and governmental issues since he took the throne after the passing of his father, the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, during the Covid pandemic in March 2021. As these developments unfold, the future of both the royal family and its traditional roots hangs in the balance.
