In a dramatic and heartwarming turn of events on Monday, a baby boy was born aboard a crowded migrant dinghy during its perilous voyage from Africa to the Canary Islands. The Spanish coast guards, who were alerted to the situation earlier that day, shared a photograph of the newborn and his mother, alongside numerous other migrants who were rescued from a vulnerable inflatable raft.
The dinghy was spotted off the coast of Lanzarote on January 6th, coinciding with the Christian holiday of Epiphany, known in Spain as the Day of the Kings. Rescuers reported that the baby boy likely came into the world just moments before their arrival. Domingo Trujillo, the captain of the rescue ship, expressed their astonishment at the sight of a "totally naked baby who was born 10, 15, or 20 minutes earlier."
Upon reaching the vessel, crew members found the mother in a precarious position on the cramped dinghy, while the newborn was being cradled by another migrant. Following medical protocols, both the mother and child were evacuated via helicopter to a hospital on Lanzarote, and no complications have since been reported regarding their health.
The commander of the helicopter, Álvaro Serrano Pérez, recounted that this miraculous birth was an extraordinary gift that coincided with the Three Kings Day celebrations – a day when children traditionally receive presents in Spain.
